Description

“Nostalgia in reverse, the longing for yet another strange land, grew especially strong in spring.”

- Vladimir Nabokov, Mary

So let me be enemy to the noose and the fading will/
Let me be open arms/
Tell the living world I am grateful still/
Let me be music/
And let me be the joyful sound/
I can disconnect from the shadow/
Hear me now/

“Like I said, I’ve never seen what some may call a boring, ordinary place,” the black jaguar argued, gesticulating with both paws. “There are no boring places. At least, none I’ve seen. Even the middle of nowhere has a few things to offer. The most tantalizing of secrets often lay out of sight for most folk. Especially underneath so-called boring and ordinary places.”

“Ah, yes, I see your point,” the fennec fox said, standing with arms akimbo. “I suppose you’re referring to Yuridia, right? A haven for our kind hiding in plain sight could easily be considered an enticing secret in itself. Although, you had fooled for a moment. At first, Johan, I thought you were claiming you’d never heard of Yuridia, let alone set foot here.”

“Why could you imagine, Michael? A vampire not knowing even the most simple, fundamental truths of our society,” the black jaguar ridiculed with a small laugh. “How absurd!”

“Quite. I knew I must have been mistaken,” said Michael with a sincere chuckle.

For fifteen minutes, the conversation had taken a circular and circuitous route. Meandering from one topic to the next, the two older vampires palavered for what felt like ages. Time as currency was not valued with the same esteem for those cursed with an immortal condition, but even vampires knew the need to stay on task. Nevertheless, Johan and Michael had become absorbed in a steady, midtempo pace that belied any need to keep one’s faculties focused on little else but pleasantries. Victor was not amused by such pleasantries. In fact, the leopard was not particularly fond of the jaguar for the most part. He was too loud and too boisterous, and ironically for a vampire of his advanced age, Johan was much too lively.

“Y’know, I often forget how lavish Yuridia must appear in comparison to that drab city above it. Being down here again, it makes me wonder why anyone would ever seek to return to the surface.”

“As you know, many in fact, choose to live down here as opposed to mingling with the mortal populace. Though this choice cannot be made by those without clout. Only a select few have such an opportunity. That independence. These rarefied few have truly earned their status.”

Truthfully speaking, Johan’s very presence was one to easily foster suspicion regardless of motive. Masterless with no pack, to everyone, the black jaguar appeared from the ether with no past anyone could recall. The Spaniard was indeed around four hundred and twenty years-old, but nobody here had seen him until tonight. Until now, he was a stranger, and even after having introduced himself, Johan was still one in all likelihood. It was this perplexing set of traits that drew their new arrival’s ire. As they were speaking, the trio was joined by Theodoric, a renowned representative of the Radic clan. Silently, he judged this peculiar jaguar as both he and the fennec fox remained locked in idle conversation.

“If you don’t mind me saying, guessing by the way you speak, you seem like a man determined. One driven by personal ambition.”

“You flatter me, Johan, but I assure you,” the fennec humbly attested, aware of his surroundings, “my pursuits are in the best interest of our kind’s continued survival, and not purely rooted in selfish ambition.”

For the Radic, Johan was but a tentative, uncertain quantity. The Spaniard bore the red eyes of his clan, yet the jaguar conveyed no real discernible features or characteristics that came part and parcel with their bloodline’s more mercurial temperament. Unlike most his supposed brethren, Johan was spirited, friendly, and cheerful. Theodoric clenched his right fist from underneath a sleeve as he assessed Johan’s countenance with suspicious glimpses. Soon the raccoon’s patience would wear thin, and its threadbare remnants would ultimately become a sore spot, a problematic point of contention.

“Michael, I believe I’ve held my tongue long enough,” Theodoric declared. “A word?”

“Yes, of course,” the fennec conceded, pivoting to face his superior. He then turned once more to the jaguar and politely asked, “Will you excuse us, Johan? I’m sorry, but I have business that demands my utmost attention. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed your company. I sure hope this isn’t the last I see of you,” he remarked with a warm yet wry smile.

“Likewise. But please, Michael, I do not wish to keep you from your duties.”

The Spaniard promptly spun around and received the Runic’s protector with a genial grin.

“Stay frosty, big guy,” the jaguar said with a grin as he patted Victor on the shoulder.

Before Johan departed, Victor took one last sidelong glance at the stranger and found himself suddenly drawn towards Johan’s coat pocket. The leopard’s ears perked as he heard the sound of wind chimes crest with a small dying light emanating from within that boldly blue duffle coat. With a raised brow, Victor observed the distinctive bluish-purple glow fade into nothingness as the jaguar disappeared from view. A moment passed, and Victor determined that, whatever the source, it did not warrant further investigation.

“How odd,” the leopard articulated before revisiting his master.

I can't take credit for what you see here. All the credit goes to the artist, :iconshadowpantherkat: for yet another fine commission. I truly can't thank her enough for all her hard work and effort. The fact I work with her as often as I do is quite the blessing. She was nice enough to let the vampire from my work, Johan, meet her own vampires from Starfire Agency! This whole piece was very fun to plot and conceptualize. I'm so very glad it all came together as I envisioned! I hope each and every one of you check out her page while you're at it. She's got plenty of great art there that's worthy of your time and admiration.
